Can not sign in to Xbox live from in game

When I launch Minecraft on Xbox I get to the menu screen and it shows my gamertag above my character skin but when I try to connect to a server it says I need to sign in to Xbox live for free, I press it and it loads for and says "we are connecting to Xbox live to sign you into your account". It stops and I locked into the menu screen and I didn't get signed in
