Slimes only spawning in darkness in slime chunks.

Conventional Minecraft wisdom states that slimes spawn in slime chunks below level 40 at any light level...

However, when I tried to make a traditional slime farm, nothing was spawning. As an expiraments I tried knocking out half of the lighting and sure enough along with other mobs slimes started spawning in the darkened areas but not in the lighted areas.
