End city teleportation error

I was in a survival world, recently when I finally got to the end and killed the dragon I threw the ender pearl and it takes me to the end city's but it's over the void so I build over to land. Next I spent sometime there when I go back to the portal I ender pearled out to go home when the portal telaported me right into the void, lost so many items that took a really long time to get so I ask if you could fix this problem so no one else has the same fate.
