Stopping Sprinting in Midair Causes Elytra to Fail

If a player sprint-jumps off a high ledge and activates the elytra while the "sprint" is still active, releasing the sprint sometimes causes the elytra to fail and sends the player falling down to the ground. This is an elytra-ruining bug, and losing all your stuff to a bug is a terrible fate.

To Reproduce

While the elytra is equipped, if a player jumps off a high point and activates their elytra without releasing the sprint button, they will fall to their death when the sprint key is eventually released.
