Minecarts stop sometimes when unloading and loading a chunk

I use a Minecart with Hopper to collect sugarcane from my automated sugarcane farm. This works great but sometimes I come back and the minecart stands still. I think this is related to chunk loading because I just stood there for an hour and it worked fine.

The other time I was there, made a journey about 1.000 blocks away and came back after circa 20-30 minutes and the minecart stopped. Same seem to happen if I switch the dimension to the nether (can’t test for the End, because I just don’t have a portal yet)
