Issues with TNT

When I was placing down TNT to clear an area in a survival mode, I was unable to blow up dirt blocks. No matter where I put the TNT, or how much TNT I put down, if it was near dirt, the dirt blocks would not get blown, up and would just stay there. I can use TNT with stone perfectly fine, and it blows it up, but not with dirt.
