Trees Creating alot of shadow.

I have a survival world with no texture packs or mods in which when a sapling grows into a tree, there is this very dark shadow underneath. It's as if the leaves are a solid block. The only way to fix it is to cause a block update. I've noticed it with Spruce,Oak,and Birch.
