Doesn't let craft when in server

So basically, when I'm in a server, my game doesn't let me craft anything. I discovered this while playing on a survival server, and tried to turn my logs into planks. I checked if my game needed an update, or if I had just played too much, so I left my game off for 12 hrs. but it was no help, this is just very annoying in my opinion, and it could use fixing.
