Armor Glitching Out

I man not sure how to reproduce this glitch, I had noticed after purchasing a chest plate from a villager at some point any armor I am wearing no longer takes damage. I tried taking off the armor and putting it in a chest, but it disappears from the inventory available to store, even though it still shows up in my regular inventory screen when viewed. Additionally, if I take the armor off to try and enchant any of it, all that shows up is empty boxes, which when clicked on crashes the game.
