compass breaks and points to random area instead of spawn point

I was in my survival world and I went hunting. it was a successful trip and I started heading home by following my compass. however the compass did not lead me home. it led me to a nearby swamp. luckily I had a temporary home there so I slept for the night. I got up and went to see exactly where the compass would take me. it led me to a random block underwater. but what's weirder is that as I approached this area, My dogs who were previously sitting at home, teleported to me. this should not happen as wolves do not move or teleport when right clicked.
