Suffocated in wall while riding horse

I was riding a horse and fell down a hole. Everything was dark, but I did not hear water. Bubbles appeared like I was starting to drown and a half heart at a time was reduced until I died. Cause of death was suffocating in a wall. I could not move and I was not able to get back before all my inventory despawned.
