Duplicate map after retrieval from item frame

Two occasions now, when retrieving a 1:8 scale map from an item frame, I've gotten two copies. I can put one copy back in the item frame and use the other for adventuring. Both get updated. I died and lost my in-hand copy, and was able to get another duplicate of the same map later.
