Attempting to cpen or break chest crashes game

When creating a zombie xp farm, they drop 3 blocks landing in a 1x2 area on a hopper on top of a double chest. When they didn't take water damage I gave up. Every time I tried to open the chest the game crashed. I broke the hopper and the right side of the double chest. When I tried to open or break the left side the game crashed. I am unable to break the chest without crashing the game. Everything else in the world works including placing and removing chest in other areas.
