When in multiplayer,if a player dies with armor on, the player still has it equipped when they respawn

When I was playing with my friends in multiplayer, I fell off a very steep cliff and died with my armor. I expected my armor to drop when I died, but when I respawned I notice that my armor was still equip before I got to find my stuff near the cliff.
