Play with friends

Is there a way that I can play minecarft with my friends and be on the same network right now it is saying If the would is still being hosted check your internet connection and it's fine but when he's at home it's fine sometimes when we are on the same network I get in its slow and then just says If that would is still being hosted check your internet connection again please help.I don't no witch versions it effects but I just put the latest version with is being affected.
