going from overworld to nether sometimes if open under portal spawn under portal

I have spawned under the portal in lava and around hogs unable to move.  I have just spawned under the portal on land several blocks away in the nether.  The portal is on y 80 in the nether.  The portal on the overworld is on y 76.
