Elytra can be destroyed from combat

My elytra in a save running the latest version of Minecraft bedrock edition on Windows 11 has, whilst being broken due to use and in its tattered state, been permanently destroyed. I have confirmed that the item has not simply gone invisible by clicking repeatedly. The elytra was, on both occasions enchanted with mending only. In the latest occurrence of this bug, I was fighting 2 skeletons and 1 spider. I can't remember what I was fighting the first time. This is a multiplayer world that I am remotely connecting to and not a realm.
