Says host has an older version of Minecraft, although it’s the latest

I tried to join my friend on Minecraft PE but it says he has an earlier version of Minecraft and that “all players should update their game to the latest version.” I tried downloading and Minecraft and redownloading, exiting and entering back. It’s still not working, and we both are updated on 1.21.20. What next?
