Cannot connect to servers

Immediately after updating Minecraft to 1.21.20, I can no longer connect to servers. The screen stays on “connecting to external server” for a long time, then shows the error “there was a problem connecting to the world.” It suggests checking my internet connection or restarting Minecraft- neither solution works.
