Blocks are disappearing and not turning into items

I was playing Minecraft (v.1.21.2) on my iPhone(iOS 17.6.1) Survival mode.

I wanted to make the land flat and collect  blocks.

However no matter how much I dig my inventory is empty.

I realized that all blocks are vanishing as I break it.
