Strange lag with nether portal transitions

Cause: high amounts of data being loaded/unloaded while going through a nether portal

expected effects: chunks not loading properly, unable to take/deal damage, and mining doesn’t drop the item.

other details: I find that this happens more often if you are playing multiplayer cross platform.
