Armour disappears of ominous trial mobs

When my and my friend died in a ominous trial chamber a couple zombies picked up our gear (sword, shield and full armour) and started wearing it. When we killed these zombies wearing our gear the didn't drop it! I assume this is to do with ominous mobs not dropping the armour they spawn with.
