Recipes aren't available when I have the materials

So I recently bought an Xbox one. Bought Minecraft, downloaded, and played. Right off the bat I figured something was wrong. After getting wood, and making planks and sticks, the top right displayed recipes unlocked for all the tools, weapons, etc. HOWEVER when going to craft, none of the recipes were available. I couldn't craft swords, tools, bed, fire, and probably many other recipes.

Yes I had the materials, yes I was at the work bench, and yes i did look at other big reports.

The game is actually unplayable because I can't cook food, can't make any tools or weapons, and can't make a respawn point. Please help
