Every time I try to give my armor an armor trim it doesn't work and says "armor can't be upgraded this way"

Every time I try to give my armor an armor trim it doesn't work and says "armor can't be upgraded this way" no matter what combination I use like silence trim gold helmet and diamon or iron legging and copper with spiral trim every combination I used just didn't work
