Can Not eat anything

I am playing Mine craft on a Windows Surface Pro 4
When my health was getting low I tried to eat a cooked pork chop. no matter what I did (right click left click) I could not eat it. I tried a cooked chicken, again same result I tried mushrooms, carrots, raw mutton cooked mutton, bread and so on... I can throw it on the floor, I can move it from one place to another, but cant eat to save my life (all pun intended)
The game settings is survival-easy no cheats or mods used
