Custom character creator skins not working

When I open Minecraft and head to the character creator skins, they all show a Steve, even after equipping some items. This also affects multiplayer where I can't see anyone with these kind of skins. Capes don't work as well...

 

To reproduce:

1. Open Minecraft
2. Go to the character creator skins, in my case I saw Steve skins
3. Attempt to equip any cosmetic item
4. They don't equip or don't show, leaving you with a Steve skin
