Nether Portal takes over 20 seconds to work

I've created a portal and when I step through it it says building terrain then has the visual effects. Meanwhile, I can hear hostiles attacking me. It takes about 20 seconds before I can do anything by which time my character is already dead. I've tried destroying the port and moving it to different spots but it still does the same thing.
