Cannot break blocks

Playing on Amazon Fire, Minecraft PE. Cannot break blocks. All controls have been reset. When user presses and holds on a block on touchscreen, the character swings arm once, a contact sound is made, but the character does not continue swinging at the block, and no destruction progress is made.
