My maxed out elytra disappeared

I was flying my elytra to my base when suddenly, I equipped my chestplate when I arrived, and it didn't go in my empty inventory. I checked everywhere over the ground, yet I could not find it. it just vanished. I was not recording, so this will just be a random photo. this was on a server while I was the only one online.
