Elytra Instantly Despawning on Death

Dying to a fall, or kinetic energy with Elytra, causes (a faithful approximation around 20% of the times) the Elytra and one or two other inventory items to instantly disappear, ignoring the 5 minute timer for despawning. Many times I died in a very trivial way, only to return to my circle of loot and have the Elytra completely gone. This has been an issue since the caves and cliffs update.
