When an item breaks in the characters hand i can't move items into that slot

When any tool breaks, it won't let me move any items into that slot and I can't anything up. I have to leave the realms server to fix it. It usually happens when the inventory is full. When i rejoin the items around me on the ground are in the inventory slot.
