Dying from mobs going through nether portal randomly

I was going into the nether to find a fortress but I died to a creeper and other mobs when I loaded in, there are torches placed on top of the nether portal in the overworld so I don't understand how a creeper, skeleton, and spider could just walk in the portal when I was not near it during the night.
