Inventory is wiped and player is set back to spawn after loading in world

When loading into my world, I am sometimes set back to world spawn, without any of my items or levels in my inventory. I'm not sure why this is happening but I've been told it's because my game can't load in the chunks I was in and so my character simply dies and sets me back to spawn.
