Suffocation damage on newly placed blocks

While placing new blocks and walking on them, I begin to take random suffocation damage. According to other players, it appears that I am falling through the newly placed blocks. I am unsure if this is an error on my end or on the server's end. I also play on a friend's realm and this issue has not occurred.
