Nintendo switch split screen does not work

When going to add a second player in split screen it gets to confirmation and then as it loads up screen flashes fast and erratically on the new player joining side. It never loads the new player into the world and continue to flash. 

only way to stop si to force quite minecraft from Home Screen. 

error is repeatable on local matches and online multiplayer joining split screen with different accounts. All accounts have Nintendo account and Microsoft account linked.
