My Neather Portal Spawn Un-generated?

Made a world, found a neather portal, looted the chest, built a base, and when I passed back by it was gone. The netherack is still there. But there is a square chunk missing where the nether portal once stood.

 

Im certain its the same one as I am meticulous about maping and it is the only Nerth portal wothin the starter map.
