nether portal not generating

So, i create a nether portal, and i go through. poof. im stuck. no nether portal spawns, and im stuck in the nether. i am usually spawned inside a block when this happens. i even went into the experimental spectator mode and looked around. nothing is there. this happened to me the other day with some friends, and now again by myself
