Extreme Lag during and after entering the Nether

Once entering the Nether, Minecraft starts dropping frames causing enemies to stay in place for a couple of seconds, the player randomly dying to fall damage, blocks freezing the game when trying to break them, and unexpected crashings after leaving the Nether.
