Cannot place signs/write in books

For the last few days, I have been unable to write on signs or in books. When I write my text on a sign and hit enter, all text immediately disappears. 

I am also unable to change the name of pieces of armor and tools. After renaming the items, the name just changes to pound symbols. 

This is on my realm world.
