Flowing lava doesn't turn to cobblestone upon contacting water

I was trying to make a cobblestone pillar all the way down to Y=0 in the End. So I first place a lava source block and allow the lava to flow all the way down, then place a water source block adjacent to it. But only the first flowing lava becomes cobblestone, the rest flowing lava just disappear
