My friend is only taking damage when I hit his feet

I played Minecraft together for about 2 hours and because we got a little frustrated, we started fighting. When I started trying to hit him, he would only take damage when I hit his feet. We were using a pack called vitality and that could be the issue, but I still want it to be checked.
