Animals take a long time to detect food held by the player after put away and taken back out

After holding out the correct food for any animal they detect it late. When I pull it out for the first time they respond to it right away and hurry to me. When putting it away and pulling it out a second time they take a while to respond to it again. Note: This goes for any animal that detects their type of food, not just sheep like in my example.
