Items are deleted when player is killed in nether portal loading screen

I was playing on my friends world, he is on switch and I'm on xbox, and I went through a portal in the nether to the overworld. The loading screens between dimensions was being extra long. When I loaded in it said I died with the piglins that killed me in the background. When I went back to get my items, they were no where to be found. I dug out all around the portals, I checked world spawn, and killed the piglins, but still nothing.
