Dark Oak logs don't burn into charcoal

Booted up a new survival world, collected a bunch of dark oak wood and cobblestone, made a furnace and used a bit of planks to try to smelt the logs, it didn't work... now I have no lighting for my shelter until I can collect a different type of wood the next morning.
