2D items stick together - hoppers don't recognize items

When 2D items are placed in a water stream, sometimes non-similar items "stick" together and are not recognized by hoppers they float past. Specifically Gold Swords and stackable items such as gold ingots, gold nuggets, and rotten flesh.
