The /op and /deop commands output as an "Unknown command" client side and server side

When I tried to execute both op and deop commands on myself using command blocks, it doesn't seem to work whatsoever and the command output just said "Unknown command". The commands DO in fact work on myself when I execute them in the chat.
Why can I not execute the commands using command blocks??? Is it for safety issues?
