Myself and Friends cannot connect to each other

Me and my friend cannot connect to each other's worlds. It tries to connect to multiplayer for about 5-10 seconds and says it cannot connect no matter how many different worlds we try and how many times we try. We can connect to the external servers just fine so I doubt it's a network connection issue. We play on pocket edition and have no idea if this affects other bedrock platforms.
