unable to connect to multiplayer on android

I was trying to join someone on their world and I would just get a message saying that it's trying to connect. A few minutes later it says unable to connect. I made several attempts to connect. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times with no results. I also tried clearing the game data which didn't help.
