Stone generation from lava also generating obsidian

In attempt of building a stone generator for something, the stone produced, but also turned the lava above the water into obsidian as well, even if it wasn't a source block. I've tried several different attempts to see and if it was just the design and all do it. This only affects stone generators and not cobblestone generators.
