Food remaining in inventory after being eaten

I am currently having this issue. I know that this originally was brought up a while ago but I've recently been having trouble with food being "eaten," filling my hunger bars and then the food remains in my inventory. A little bit later those hunger bars would instantly decrease because I didn't actually get to eat. This was happening in 1.17.41 and is still happening in 1.18. I had hoped it would go away, but it didn't.
